What is CBT depression therapy?

CBT Depression Therapy session London Oxford Circus
The aim of this page is to provide you with some basic information about cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for depression. Cognitive behavioural therapy for depression is one of the leading counselling and psychotherapeutic approaches, developed by the American psychiatrist Aaron Beck in the mid-20th century. The core mechanism and goal of cognitive behavioural therapy is to focus on the client’s maladaptive thoughts, behaviours, and feelings, using a solution-focused approach to identify and modify unhelpful patterns. This evidence-based method is also highly effective in the treatment of anger management difficulties. Another important aspect of CBT is the collaborative relationship between therapist and client, working together to reduce depression, improve emotional regulation, and enhance the overall quality and enjoyment of life.
How does CBT depression therapy work?
Clients usually meet with the therapist weekly, although some choose more frequent sessions. During therapy, they explore the underlying causes of depression and the factors that may maintain it, leading to a personalised treatment plan to address depressive symptoms. In CBT and cognitive behavioural therapy, clients may be given agreed assignments to support progress and accelerate recovery, always at a pace that feels manageable and constructive. These structured approaches are also effective for anger management, difficulties within a relationship, and behavioural concerns, including domestic violence, where appropriate assessment is essential. Sessions are available via secure online video call sessions, offering flexibility and convenience. While cognitive behavioural therapy is one of many counselling methods, the therapist will carefully assess suitability, as certain situations — such as bereavement — may require a different therapeutic approach. A strong therapeutic relationship remains central to all effective therapy, ensuring clients feel safe, respected, and supported in deciding the length and focus of their work.

When does CBT depression therapy fail to work?
CBT therapy for depression is generally an effective approach for overcoming depression, provided the client continues to apply the learned coping strategies outside of sessions and avoids using drugs or alcohol that may undermine the psychotherapy process. CBT for depression is less likely to be effective if a client withholds significant aspects of their personal history or current circumstances that may contribute to the development and maintenance of depression. Likewise, CBT for depression may be less successful for clients who end therapy prematurely, before meaningful progress is achieved, as this can increase the risk of relapse.
Session Length, Pricing, and Booking Information
Sessions are one hour weekly, with most clients benefiting from at least three months of therapy, around twelve sessions. For complex trauma, such as child sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or physical abuse, therapy may extend to six months. CBT for depression sessions are delivered securely via online video call sessions, allowing clients to participate from the comfort and privacy of their own homes either in London or nationwide.
Clients at Westminster Psychotherapy Ltd, founded by Leona Sears, report feeling supported throughout their therapy — see the reviews page for experiences. Sessions cost £80 per hour, with an 18% discount on 12 prepaid sessions, and additional discount packages for 8 or 10 sessions are available.
